was not uncommon as a personal name in Aberdeenshire, and occasionally appears in the Poll Book (Macdonald, Place names of west Aberdeenshire, s. v. Warrackstone). Andrew Warrak was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1481 and John Warrach in 1614 (NSCM., I, p. 29,112). Dominus Willielmus Werok officiated at the chapel of Nudry-Merschal in 1502 (Good, Liberton, p. 72), and John Werrok was tenant of the bishop of Aberdeen, 1511 (REA., I, p. 373). Alexander Warrak who was witness in an Aberdeen witch trial in 1596 (SCM., I. p. 88) may be the Alexander Varrak who was paid in 1611 for ringing the common bell of the town (SCM., V, p. 85). James Warrack in Tollafine was accused in 1642 of hiding stolen horses (RSCA., III, p. 7), Donald Worrach in Skinene is in record, 1664 (Caithness), and John Werock was farmer in Upper Liberton, 1712 (Good, p, 72). The surname occurs in Edinburgh, 1619, as Warrok (Edinb. Marr.). Warroch 1738. The origin of this name is uncertain. Warrocks was a barbarous form of LL. warectarius, a ploughman. Warroch Hill in Orwell parish is in Blaeu's Atlas Warrock, and in the Retours the name is spelled Warrok, Warrock, Warroke, and Wanoch Burn is the boundary between Fossoway and Orwell parishes compare Warwick.
