Doubtless from Warwick in the county of the same name in England, rather than from Warwick in Cumberland, which represents Warthewic (1120). Some of the Warwicks of today, however, may derive their surname from Warwick in Cumberland. Ricardus de Warewic witnessed William de Moreuille's charter "Edulfo filius Uctredi Gillemoristun que antiquit us vocabatur peniacob," a. 1196 (REG., p. 40). Willelmus de Warewic witnessed a charter by Adam de Hastengis of land of Kengildurs to Aberbrothoc, c. 121426 (RAA., I, p. 87). Richard de Warwyk del counte de Arne rendered homage, 1296. His seal shows a crescent enclosing a star, S' Ricardi.. Werwic (Bain, II, p. 199,548). Six of this name are recorded in CD., of whom five are in the shires of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright.
