From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Territorial, from the district of Wauchopedale in the parish of Langholm, Dumfriesshire, The family appears however to have been early settled in Roxburghshire, but their early charters have been destroyed. They are never found as tenants-in-chief (in capite) of the Crown, but always as holding the subordinate although honorable position of a vassal or tenant of a baron, and yet had tenants and vassals of their own, in English feudal law a vavasour (Med. Latin vassus vassorum). Ada de Waleuhope witnessed a charter by Symon de Lyndsay to the Abbey of Melrose in the reign of William the Lion, and dominus Ada de Waleuhope, evidently the same person, witnessed another charter to Melrose in the same reign (Melros, p. 132,149). Alan de Walchope witnessed a charter by Thomas de Lundin granted between 1203-14 (RAA., I, 65). In 1247 Robert de Waluchop, son of Alan de Waluchop, received from Alexander II a charter of lands in Aberdeenshire (Arch. Scot., I, p. 366), and in 1249, as Robert de Walwehope he was one of the twelve knights appointed to meet twelve knights from England to settle the law of the marches (APS., I, p. 413). As Robert de Walhope he witnessed gift of land in Aython (Aytoun) to the monks of Coldingham, 1259 (Raine, 203). Alan de Walchop or Walchoup witnessed a quitclaim of Beeth-Waldef in Fife, 1278 (RD., p. 52-53). Robert de Waighope rendered homage at Aberdeen, 1296, an Thomas Waighope in Edinburgh, a tenant under the bishop of St. Andrews. The seal of the latter bears a hawk or raven killing a bird, SJ Thome Walchop (Bain, II, p. 195,205, 555). Thomas de Walchope was sub vicecomes de Perth, 1379 (Scon, p. 144). Meg Walchop is recorded in Aberdeen, 1408 (CWA., p. 316). David Wauchoip was procurator of the Scottish Nation in the University of Orleans, 1502 (SHSM., II, p. 95), and in the records of the Scots men-at-arms in France the name appears as Vaucop and Vulcob. Walichop 1262, Wauhope 1530, Wawchop 1589. In the North of Ireland it is pronounced Wahab.
