WAWANE: Wawane of Steinston is recorded in the Workman ms., but no information given. Adam Wawayne held a ploughgate in the barony of Farnydovne, c. 1372 (RMS., I, 421,548). A later Adam Wawan witnessed a charter by William, Lord Crichton, apud Strivelyn, 1449 (Annandale, I, p. 13). William Wawane presented to the prebend of Ellone in 1479 (ADC., p. 93) appears again in 1502 as William Wawne, canon of Aberdeen (Bain, IV, 1697). James Wawan, probably a relative, held the prebend of Ellon in 1521, and James Wawane de Oyne is in record in 1537 (REA., II, p. 112). The surname occurs in Tyninghame in 1644 as Wawand (Waddell, p. 56). John Wawane was a witness in Linlithgow, 1531 (Johnsoun), Wauane 1540. Lower gives Wawn as the provincial pronunciation of Waghen in Yorkshire. Index to RMS., I, compares this name with Wan, and Turnbull, index to Stewart's Croniclis equates it with Wauch.
