From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From the lands of Wedderburn in Berwickshire. Wautier de Wederburne of the county of Edeneburk who rendered homage in 1296 is the first of the name in recoro. His seal is a star of seven rays, and S' Walti de Wed'bvrn (Bain, II, p. 201,547). (Edinburgh, it may be mentioned, took in part of Berwickshire in the thirteenth century.) Hugo de Wederburne was a charter witness in 1332 (BNCH., XVI, p. 327), and John de Wederborne was assizor on an inquest relating to the vill of Lumsden in 1364. The seal of Willelmus de Wedirburn is appended to a resignation of the lands of Fastforland, Berwickshire, in 1375 (Douglas, III). Although designated 'of Wedderburn' the last two appear not to have owned the lands which are in record at least as early as 1341 in possession of the Homes (Raine, 565). William Whedyrburn was present at perambulation of the marches between Brokhole and Butterden in 1431 (ibid., 639). The surname became prominent in Dundee history in the fifteenth century, and from 1557 to 1717 Wedderburns were town clerks there and notaries up to 1787. A branch of the Wedderburns settled in Moravia (Hungary) and still flourish under the name of Wetterborn. The place name Wedderburn in Aberdeenshire may be a transplanted name. Vadderbarne 1597, Vadderborne 1574, Vadderburn 1605, Vederburn 1513, Vethirburne 1505, Wadirburn 1496, Watherburne 1506, Wathirburne 1502, Wedderburne 1532, Wetherburn 1537, Wetherburne 1573, Whedirburn 1441, Wodderburne 1634, Woddirburn c. 1530, and Voddcrburn Wadderburne, Weatherburne.
