"Of great antiquity in the county of Lincoln, being descended from John, Lord of Castleton, who was living in the time of William the Conqueror, and is said to have assisted Robert de Todeni, Baron of Belvoir, in the defence of his castle." The name would appear to have been derived from the Lincolnshire parish so called; and there Sir William Welby, "who heads their well-authenticated pedigree, undoubtedly possessed property between 1307 and 1327.
