From the lands of Wellwood in the parish of Dunfermline, Fife. The first of the name in record is William Walwod who witnessed a notarial instrument in 1422 (Cambus., p. 103). He is probably the Willyhame of Walwod who was in 1437 one of the "Juggis compositouris of the debaitis... mouit betwix a venerabill fadir in crist Androw. Abbot of Dunfermlyn and the convent of that ilke on a part and Daui hacet of lumfennen on the tother part be-langand the landis of petfuian" (RD., p. 285). Thomas Walwood was one of the "Commissari Burgorum" in 1578 "pro Sanctandrois" (RHM., I, p. 15), and William Wallatt, portioner of Touch, and several others of the surname are mentioned in 1588 (RPC., IV, p. 317). The family was intimately connected with the burgh of Dunfermline and for two centuries and more Wellwoods were provosts and officers of the regality. William Welwood was author of the earliest treatise on maritime jurisprudence (The Sea-law of Scotland, Edinburgh, 1590) published in Great Britain. In the Dunfermline Burgh Records, 1488-1584, the name appears as Vallod, Vallot, Vallud, Valuode, Wallaud Wallet 1575, Wallod, Wallud 1494, Waluode, Walwode 1490, Wollat, etc. Other old forms noted are: Velvod 1594, Waldwod 1558, Wallude 1512 and Walwood.
