Wendhausen Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

In 1125 a place in Germany is recorded as Wenethusen. This name indicates a settlement by the Slavic tribe of the Wenden, although there is no further evidence. Around 1388, there was a castle named Wendhausen, which could have been a water castle because of the location in the vicinity of the castle. In 1495 the place belonged to the Principality of Wolfenbüttel. Wendhausen, originally Probst von Wendhausen, later Stisser von Wendhausen, is the name of a lord of the Braunschweig nobility. After several destruction of the castle, the wealthy duke and politician Philipp Ludwig Probst indicated by the Braunschweig (English: Brunswick) dukesRudolf August and Anton Ulrich, received the feud as a reward for his services and rebuilt the castle Wendhausen on its foundation walls (1683-1688).

Today in Germany there are existing at least three villages called Wendhausen (zip codes :21400, 31174 and 38165). Maybe being important: 38165 Wendhausen is situated 9 km east of Wenden which is an urban quarter of Braunschweig today. That leads to the speculation that "the man from Wenden" lived in a house as the first bearer of the surname Wend(en)hausen. Later on Wendhausen became a small village. On the other hand the noble Wendhausens may be members of the House of Wenden.

The onomastic meaning is: 'man from a town/village called Wendhausen'. The etymologic derivation is:

a) -hausen = 'house'

b) Wend- description of the inhabitant of the house who was responsible for the name given to the house

c) Wendhausen is a contraction of Wendehausen or Wendenhausen

d) For Wende there are two interpretations: Slav and Vandal.Due to the Indo-European-Barbarian-Invasion the Vandal version seems to be more probably.
