(English) belonging to Wennington (Lancs, Hunts, Essex), the Anglo-Saxon *Wen- inga-tún-the Estate of the W'ena Family [the pers. name is Old English wina, hope + the genit. pl., -inga, of the son suff. -ing + tún, farm, estate, &c.] The Hunts place occurs in a ioth-cent. Latin grant as Wenintona and Wenigtone. The Lancs township was Weninton, Wen- igton, and Wenington in the 13th cent.; it is situated on the Wenning Brook, whose name is doubtless from the place-name.

There has been some confusion with Winnington.
