WERNEBALD: Wernebald was the earliest known ancestor of the Cunninghams. Robert filius Warnebaldi and his heirs had a grant of the vill of Parva Draffan from John, abbot of Kelso, c. 1160--80 (Kelso, 105), and c. 1170 Robert filius Wernebaldi granted the church of Kilmaurs to the Abbey of Kelso, which grant was confirmed a. 1189 by Robert, son of Robert, son of Wernebald (ibid., 284). Robert, son of Warnebald or Werernbald, appears several times as charter witness in the first quarter of the thirteenth century (RAA., I, index; REG., p. 65). He witnessed the gift by William the Lion of a toft in Stirling to the church of Glasgow, c. 1189-99 (REG., p. 67). Robert, son of Warnebald, and Richenda, his spouse, in 1238 made a gift of the lands of Tibberty to the Abbey of Arbroath (RAA., I, p. 198).
