User-submitted Reference
There have only been two known Wesselowski families in history, which explains why there are so few people with the surname. One of the families originally had the last name "Veselovsky" and were of Ashkenazic origin. These Wesselowskis were well known Russian-Jewish diplomats during the 1600s. Very few, if any, Wesselowskis from this branch are alive today.
The other Wesselowski family originally went by Wesselowsky, but the name naturally evolved to terminate in -ski. It is this Wesselowski family that is responsible for all the Wesselowskis in the United States. One family member was able to leave Germany before WWII, and the others soon left as well as they were Jewish and fleeing Nazi persecution.
Both the families originated in Poland. The name most likely originated as a geographical surname based on the town of Veselovo in Poland.
