Local. There are places named Weston and Westoun in Lanarkshire, and a Weston near Dolphinston, Peeblesshire. William de Westone of Wyggetone rendered homage in 1296. His seal bears two squirrels facing each other, a small dog below: S' W. de Wesytonam (Bain, II, p. 214,534). John of Westone was juror on an inquisition at Peebles, 1304 (ibid., 1436), and John de Westone held a ten-pound land in the tenement of Mertone near Edinburgh before 1315 (RMS., I, 15). William of Westone was in the king of England's service in France, 1369 (Bain, IV, 155). Thomas Westoun forfeited his lands in the reign of David II (RMS., I, App. II, 811). Thomas Westoun rendered to Exchequer the accounts of the burgh of Selkirk, 1566 (ER., XIX, p. 326). David Wastoun in Faldlay, parish of Carnwath, 1678, and Alexander Wastoune in Faldlaw, 1689 (Lanark CR.). Wastoun of that Ilk in Workman's ms.

Thus, to take two ioth-cent. instances, Weston, nr. Bath (so called from its position relative to the latter), is referred to as “in loco qui dicitur at Westune" (dat.: ‘Cart. Sax’, no. 1009); while Weston, Dorset, is spoken of as "in loco quern solicolae æt Westune vocitant" (dat.: ‘C.S.’ no. 696).

The English gazetteers give about fifty parishes and hamlets of this name, which signifies simply ' the western enclosure,' and corresponds with Easton, Norton, and Sutton. From divers of these, some of the families of Weston have sprung; but the widely-spread Westons of Surrey and Sussex are descended from the house of De Wistoneston, or Wiston, of Wiston, co. Sussex.
