Of local origin from some small place probably in the west of Fife. The place name may now be extinct. John Westwalter, friar of Culross in 1565, appears again in 1569 as John Vestualter, friar and notary of the monastery of Culross (Laing, 782,844, 845), and is doubtless the John Vostuatter, clerk of the diocese of St. Andrew in 1577 (ibid., 953). Andrew Westwater is recorded in Dunfermline in 1584 (Dunfermline), William Westwater in Erniesyde in the parish of Glendovan in 1617 and Robert Westwater in Over Mosyde in 1620 (Dunblane), Cristian Westwater was on the stool of repentance in Kirkcaldy in 1640 (PBK., 174), and May Westwater recorded in the parish of Torphichen in 1680 (Torphichen). Alexander Macdonald Westwater, Church of Scotland missionary in Manchuria, died 1934. Wastwater a. 1587.
