An ancient baptismal name. A Wateman de London occurs in Domesday, as a previous tenant; and the name is otherwise spelt Whateman and Hwateman. In the middle ages, the family dwelt in Kent, near Romney and Hawkhurst, and left much land to monastic establishments. According to B.L.G. the Whatmans ranked "amongst the independent yeomen of Kent." We must bear in mind that, in old times, that phrase designated a very wealthy and influential class of persons.
