WIGHAME: This surname occurs occasionally on the Border, but is not mentioned in the Liddesdale rent rolls of 1376 or 1541. Old forms are Wigham, Wighame, Wigholme, and in the Workman ms. it is recorded as Wighoun and Wigum. Rob of Wygam witnessed resignation of a feu in Peebles, 1471 (Scots Lore, p. 52), Paul Veghum was burgess of Northtberwyk in 1561 (CMN., 80-81), and Thomas Wigholme was burgess of Edinburgh, 1564 (RPC., I, p. 278). James Wigholme was retoured heir of Andrew Wigholme in lands in the barony of Dummany, 1579 (Retours, Linlithgow, 14), Ninian Whighome appears in Edinburgh, 1619 (Edinb. Marr.), and Wingham of Sanquhar was originally (c. 1618) spelled Wigholme. Edward Wigham was overseer at Leadhills, 1749 (Lanark CR.). Harrison says it is a form of Wickham.
