Whillans Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Surnames current in Roxburghshire, and derived from the old lands of Quheillands (1642), Wherland or Whilland (1653), or Quheilland (1G61) in the lordship of Liddisdaill. Thomas and William Querland mentioned in 1505 are referred to in the following year as Thomas and William Querlance (Peebles, p. 33, 41). James Quhillans appears in Coldingham, 1622 (Laing, 1902), ar Robert Whillas was notary there, 1675 (ibid., 2747). Thomas Whillas was juror on a retour of special service in Duns, Berwickshire, in 1672 (Home, 194). John Whillas in Upsetlington, 1663, and five more of the name are recorded in Lauder Commissariot Record. Robert Whillas, merchant in Duns, 1688 (Edin. App.). Recorded in Lauder, Berwickshire, 1940 (WScol.). (2) The Argyllshire bearers of this surname are of Irish origin, an offshoot of the MacWhellans or MacQuhillans of the Route (a corruption of the name Dalriada) in Antrim. In Irish the name is MacUidhilin or MacUidhlin, apparently a corruption of MacLlewellen, in 1627 spelled McVuellen. The family is believed to have been of Welsh origin and settled in Antrim soor. after the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland. The greater part of their lands were forcibly taken from them by the Macdonnells towards the close of the sixteenth century, completely destroying their power and reducing them to a subordinate position. This probably led some of the name to seek a new home on the opposite shore of Argyllshire.
