WHIPPO: Sir Robert Quhippo was a witness in Lanark in 1490 (Lanark, p. 8). He is most probably the Sir Robert Quhippo or Quhippup, chaplain, who had a suit in 1495 as to the ferry at Clydesholm. Sir Thomas Quhuppo was a rentaller in Lanark, c. 1505 (Lanark, p. 15). William Quhippo of Kydlaw is mentioned in 1583 (Soltre, p. 149), and Eupham Quhippo in Edinburgh in 1598 (Edinb. Marr.). David Quhippo of Leyhouss was retoured heir of Thomas Quhippo in the lands of Kidlaw in 1614 (Retours, Haddington, 64),and Robert Whippo was burgess of Dysart, 1653 (Inquis. Tut., 796). A family of this name in East Lothian figure in the criminal trials, and after the beginning of the seventeenth century they disappear from the district.
