WHITSLADE: Local. There are lands of Whitslade in the parish of Broughton, Peeblesshire, another Whitslade near Hawick, Roxburghshire, and a Whitslaid near Lauder, Berwickshire. There is also a Weedslade in Northumberland. Willelmus de Wideslade witnessed a charter by Steffan, son of Swan de Œtun (Ayton), to the Priory of Coldingham, c. 1170 (Raine, 434). Audoenus de Witslede witnessed a confirmation charter, c. 1190 (Kelso, 260) William de Wideslad was witness to a charter by Patrick, fifth earl of Dunbar (Raine, 123), and Willelmus de Wideslade or Wydeslade witnessed a quitclaim by David de Quikeswude of the wood of Aldecambus to the Priory of Coldingham (ibid., 185).
