Whitson Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

William Quhitsoun, bailie of Perth in 1369, is doubtless the Willelmus de Qwhithosum, burgess of the same town in 1379 (Milne, p. 29; Scon, p. 144). John Quhytson who witnessed a charter by Robert Mersar of Inuerpefery, 1454 (LIM., 120), appears in 1456 as John Quhitsoun, burgess of Perth (RAA., II, 107). In 1484 and again in 1498 the lands of le Peblis in Angus were leased to Thomas Quhitsone (ibid., II, 283,393). James Quhitsoun was witness in Fife, 1547 (Gaw, 9), Thomas Whitson was notary and writer in Kirktoun of Ratray, 1688 (DPD., II, p. 265,268), Janet Whitson appears in Easter Caputh, 1693 (Dunkeld), and Thomas Whitson was an important man in Dundee in 1823. Quhytsoun 1458. Harrison suggests (1) White's son as meaning, and (2) for Whitsunday, a name given to one born on that day. This latter to me unlikely. First preferable. The local pronunciation of the name in Roxburghshire is Whutson.

The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

(English) 1 White’s Son: v. White.

2 for Whitsunday: a name given to one born on that day [Old English hwíta sunnan- dæg, lit. White Sunday] William Wytesoneday.—Hundred Rolls
