This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. Pentecost was once a familiar fontname; compare Nowell, Pask, and Christmas. As confirmations were general on Whitsunday, and it was a common circumstance to change the baptismal name then, it was natural that Pentecost, or 'Whitsunday,' should sometimes become the new name. The candidates were addressed by name till 1550.
