All the Lancashire Whittles, a numerous progeny, hail from (1). This name is commonly found in the Chorley and Preston district. It reached London in, or earlier than, the 17th century.

(English) 1 belonging to Whittle = (a) the White Hill [Old English hwít + hyll] (b) the White Nook or Corner [Old English hwít + h(e)alh] The Lanc. Whittle (-le-Woods) was Withul(l, Whithull, also apparently Wythalg and Quitehalhe, in the 13th cent., Whityll in the 15th cent.; so that there has been early confusion here, some of which is doubtless due to the fact that there are one or two other small spots in Lanc. of the same name.
