From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Several individuals between 1165 and 1306 appear to have derived their surname from the lands of Whitton in Morebattle parish, Roxburghshire (Melras, 47,91-94,109,125-129, 132,140, etc.). Magister R. de Wytton witnessed a charter by John, prior of St. Andrews in 1285 (Neubotle, 59). Michael de Witton and Adam de Wytton, both of the county of Selkirk, rendered homage in 1296. The seal of Michael shows a deer running and S' Michaclis de Witten, and that of Adam which is defective, reads S' Ade de Wittona (Bain, II, p. 198,544). Richard de Wyttone, persone of the church of Hauwyk, also rendered homage in the same year. His seal bears, if it be his, a lion fighting an enormous dragon, and S' Ricardi de Wynhov (ibid., p. 202,553). Michael de Whitton was chief forester of the forest of Selkyrk in 1303 (Bain. IV. p 457), and David Qwitton was juror on an inquest at Roxburgh in 1361 (ibid., 61).
