Reaney gives three alternative derivations for this, all from Old English, including the one accepted by Woulfe viz atte wytheg (the white enclosure). It has been in Co. Wexford and Co. Waterford for many centuries and from 1305 occurs frequently in records relating to those counties. They possessed, and probably built, the castles of Ballyhealy, Baldwinstown and Ballyteige in Co. Wexford, the last named being the seat of the principal family of the name. By 1659, when Petty's “census” was taken, Whittys were very numerous in Co. Wexford, 27 families being recorded in the baronies of Forth and Bargy. When Griffith carried out his Valuation two centuries later he found more than 150 Whitty householders in Co. Wexford, and this is corroborated by the official birth registrations which began in 1864. There is an armorial monument to Walter Whitty (d. 1630) in the church at Kilmore, Co.
Wexford. Robert Whitty was convicted of “high treason” in 1715-his crime being espousing the cause of the “Old Pretender”. Two Co. Wexford men, Michael James Whitty (1795-1873)and his son Edward Michael Whitty (1827-1860), were pioneers in the sphere of journalism. Ellen Whitty (Mother Mary Vincent of the Australian Sisters of Mercy) (1821-1892), pioneer nun, was also born in Co. Wexford.
In Ulster there are some families of Whittey (sic), presumably descendants of MacWhitty and Mawhitty householders who appear in the Hearth Money Rolls for Co. Antrim (1669).
