WHITEWELL: Local, from some place of the name in the South. In Latin charters de Albo Fonte. Edward de Albo Fonte, rector of the church of Kirkmolyn, made a grant of the lands of Qwhytwel to the House of Soltre between 1238 1300 (Soltre, p. 28). Henry Wytewele, burgess of Dumfries, 1215 (Kelso, 332), is probably the Henry Whitewell, burgess of Dumfries, to whom the monks of Kelso granted a lease of their whole lands in the parish of Dumfries for 12sh. yearly (ibid., 330). Roger de Wytewele in Dumfriesshire, c, 1259 (APS., I, p. 88; Bain, I, 2176). Edward de Whitewelle of the county of Edinburgh rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 199). Whitewell is a Yorkshire surname from a vill and township of the name in the North Riding.
