From Hwic, white, and klif, a rock or cliff; or rather from wic, a Saxon word for borough or village, the town on the cliff; a village six miles from Richmond, in Yorkshire, England, from which the family derive their name, and of which they were possessed from the time of the Conquest by William the Conqueror till the year 1606.
