Wildsmith Surname Definition:

This surname is derived from an occupation. I cannot discover an early instance. I do not know the origin. My first example is Woolsmith, but that seems as hard of solution as the rest. Nevertheless, as the surname is almost entirely confined to Yorkshire, the centre of the woollen trade, some connexion may exist.

A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

John Wyldesmyth was one of the jurors on inquest on lands of Hopkelchoc, 1259 (Bain, I. 2162; APS., I, p. 88). The English authorities differ in their explanation of this name. Lower suggests "probably a corruption of weld-smith,' a forger of iron; Bardsley says that the surname in England "is almost entirely confined to Yorkshire, the centre of the woollen trade," so the name may have a connection with wool; Harrison says it means a smith dweller at a weald; and Weekley "the smith in the wild." George W. Wildsmith died in Edinburgh, 1939.

The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

(English) Weald-Smith [v. Wild2 and Smith]

Surnames of the United Kingdom (1912) by Henry Harrison

(German) The smith, the worker in metals, who lived and worked in the forest.

Dictionary of American Family Names (1956) by Elsdon Coles Smith

Probably a corruption of weld-smith. ' To weld ' is defined in Bailey's Dictionary as "to forge iron."
