This name is very well known in its Gaelic form because of the international reputation of the Irish actor Michael MacLiammoir. Willmore Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This name is very well known in its Gaelic form because of the international reputation of the Irish actor Michael MacLiammoir. Bardsley equates Willmore with the English name Wilmer, but, though I have not met any near-Gaelic anglicized form of the name, I cannot state for certain that it is not Irish in origin: it occurs in Co. Tyrone in 1596, when Anne Willmore received a “pardon”. * The Fiant in question (no. 5996) is somewhat unusual and is worth quoting in full: “Pardon to Hugh, earl of Tyrone, and all the sons, brothers, kinsmen, followers, tenants and servants of the said earl, dwelling in the country of Tyrone, Henry Hovenden, gent, Robert Hovenden, his son, Francis Mountfort, John Baeth and James Gernon, gentlemen, Rob. Benett, Anne Willmore, George Cawell and Edm. Barrett, and all others persons dwelling in the country of Tyrone.”

At any rate it was definitely in a remote part of Ireland as far back as Elizabethan times. It may be of interest to mention that Willmore occurs in a list of Latin equivalents of fourteenth century English surnames, printed by Ewen, as de Salicosa Mara. Always a rare name it occurs occasionally as Wilmor as well as Willmore in comparatively recent times in Dublin.

*For the significance of the term “pardon” in the Tudor Fiants see More Irish Families, p. 4283.
