This surname appears to have appeared in Reading, Berkshire in 17th century. They appear to have belonged to a novel protestant sect, but one Thomas Willats, possibly a timber merchant, son of Moses Willats, sent his son as a chorister to Eaton Collge. The son became an Anglican clergyman in Northwich, Cheshire and married into the gentry. The family settled in Kidmore End where they had an estate of 1,000 acres. Descendants married into the Bakers and trace their ancestry back through the Fritzgeralds' premiere Irish Dukes of Leinster, Ireland to Lady Frizel daughter of James Stuart II.
Because they appeared spontaneously in the record their surname may originate from Germany or Holland.
