Probably from Windsor in Berkshire, early spellings of which are Windlesora (1096), Windlesore and Wyndelshore (1297). W de Wyndesovere witnessed a grant by Radulph de Veir to the Abbey of Kelso, c. 1180 (Kelso, 215), and c. 1178-82, as Walter de Windesouer he witnessed William the Lion's charter to Arbroath (RAA., II, p. 535), and also the same king's confirmation of Neutun to Walter de Berkeley (ibid., I, p. 329). As Walterus de Windleshore he witnessed William the Lion's grant of the forest of Grenewde, etc., to the monks of Coldingham (Raine, 45, 46). T. or G. de Windlesouer witnessed a gift by William de Vallibus of a half mark of silver to the church of S. Thomas of Aberbrothoc, p. 1218 (RAA., I, p. 83,264). William Wyndfor (error for Wyndsor) was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1445 (NSCM., I, p. 9).
