From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A Roxburghshire surname of local origin from a place named Winterhope. There was a Winterupe in Jedburgh in the eighteenth century, and there is a Winterhope Burn in Middlebie, Dumfriesshire, and a Winterhopehead (in 1622 Winterhoipheid) near Ecclefechan. Brockie (The Gypsies of Yetholm, p. 66) says this name was assumed by gypsies to hide their origin. Walter Winterhoip in Spittell was charged with trespass on the lands of Sir Andrew Ker of Oxenhame in 1619 (RPC., XII p. 20), and Robert Winterhope and others, servitors to James Ker of Bewlie, were charged with riot and assault in 1622 (ibid., p. 628). Jhone Wintroip in Elestoune in 1608 was probably father of John Winterope in Erlleistoune in 1657 (RRM., I, p. 70,141). Another John Wintrope took part in field conventicles in 1684 (ibid., III, p. 43), and a third John Wintrop was portioner of Newsteid in 1681 (ibid., III, p. 103). James Wintrop in Pathfoot, 1722 (Dumfries).
