Of territorial origin from the lands of Winton in the parish of Pencaitland, East Lothian. Alan de Wyntoun witnessed a grant by Peter de Grame to the House of Soltre between 1190 and 1238 (Soltre, p. 11), and before 1200 Henry de Wynton witnessed a charter by Hugh Rydale, dominus de Cranestun (Neubotle, 12). Aleyn de Wyntone and Gode de Wyntone, both of Edinburghshire, and Thomas de Wyntone of Ayrshire rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 201,205, 206,209). The surname is frequently met with in Aberdeenshire, appearing there as early as 1341, in which year Ingeram de Wenton appears as one of an inquest on tithes (REA., I, p. 69). Andrew de Wyntoun, prior of St. Serf's, Lochleven, author of the Orygynale Cronykil of Scotland, was probably a member of the Aberdeen branch of the family. In 1395 he was present at perambulation of the bounds of Kyrknes and Louchor (RPSA., p. 3). George de Venton was prebend of Lonmey, Aberdeenshire, 1427 (REA., I, p. 228). James Wentoun was one of an inquest at Aberdeen, 1457 (RAA., I, 108), and Andrew Wentoune was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1477 (NSCM., I, p. 26). Robert Winton, a Scot, had letters of denization in England in 1480 (Bain, IV, 1465). Elizabeth Wentoune was retoured heir of John Wentoune in Bogny, her father, 1633 (Retours, Aberdeen, 223), and William Winton from the parish of King Edward was killed in the first Great War (Turriff).
