There's at least two different origins:
In the regions with Alemannic dialects (Baden-Württemberg, Switzerland, Alsace) the name derives from wiese (meadow), so a Wi(e)s(e)ler / Wissler / Wißler would denominate someone "who came from over the meadows", probably from (south of) the Alps.
The other seems to be from Northern Germany or The Netherlands, coming from wisselen (Dutch) / wichseln (Low German) / wechseln (High German), which means 'to change'. So a Wiss(e)ler / Wichsler / Wechsler would denominate a 'money changer'.
