"This family is very antient, for they were Gentlemen of good rank in the time of King John, as it appeareth by many antieut Grants and Evidences of theirs, which I have seene." Peaeham's Compleat Gentleman, edit. 1661, p. 235. The name is derived from the lands of Woodhouse or Wodehouse, at Silfield, co. Norfolk. The first of the name mentioned in the Baronetages is Sir Constantine de Wodehouse, who married Isabel, daughter and heiress of Botetourt, at the beginning of the reign of Henry I.
