My grandma has a book about how the variants evolved since they left Ireland. A friend says she's pretty sure they originated in County Tyrone, Ireland, but I don't recall exactly where.

I live in Columbus, Ohio, as does my dad and grandma. She met her husband (died 1965) Charles Lyman Widney in western New York by East Randolph or Lake Chautauqua where we've still got a lot of family from her side. The friend (Monique) says that after immigrating through Ellis Island, that some Widneys moved to the west part of New York state, while another contingent moved to Southern California, where Robert Widney ended up founding the University of Southern California in Los Angeles (and has a student union named after him).
