From the occupation or office of 'wood-reeve' or overseer of a forest (Old English wudu + (ge)refa). The land of John Woddruff in Glasgow is mentioned in 1505 (LCD., p. 258), and a piece of land there was sold by William Wodrufe in 1551 (Protocols, I). Patrick Wodruif was reidare at Egleschame (Eaglesham), 1574 (RMR.), Thomas Widdrow was merchant and guild burgess of Glasgow, 1610 (Burgesses), and Janet Widdrow or Wardrop at Innerkip was accused of being a witch, 1629 (RPC., 2. ser. III, p. 125). The Rev. Robert Wodrow (1679-1734), minister of Eastwood and church historian, was the best known of the name. His eldest son, Andrew, emigrated to Virginia in 1768 and served on the side of the colonists in the Revolution. Widrof 1551, Widrow 1667, Witherow 1702, Withraw 1683, Woodrow 1672, Wodrofe 1551, Wodruf 1507, Woodrowe 1658, Woodruif 1574; Widdrowe. In Ulster it has become Witherow through change of d to th.
