'the son of Wolf,' or Ulf, a personal name, once so familiar that our local nomenclature could not escape its influence, as in Ulverston, Wolverton, Wolvesey, Wolvercote, Wolverley, Wolverhampton, Wolferton, &c. The Index to Freeman's Norman Conq. Wills how that Ulf or Wolf was almost as common a personal name in England as in Iceland or Denmark. See also Miss Yonge, ii. 267. Ulf, son of Tur-ulf, witnessed the foundation charter of St. Mary's Priory, Lancaster (Baines' Lancashire). Another Ulf married Canute s sister; yet a third was Bishop of Dorchester.

Wulf, 'wolf was an Old English personal name, and ON. Ulf was a very common name with the Norsemen. Ulfus, stnescallus, witnessed a charter by Eschina, domina de Molle, c. 1165—77 (RMP., p. 75); Walterus Lupus was burgess of Dundee, 1202 (RAA., I, p. 96), and Willelmus filius Hulf held land in Aberdeen before 1281 (REA., II, p. 278). Alexander Wife witnessed grant of part of a toft in Perth to the Abbey of Lundors early in the thirteenth century (LAC., p. 80). A messuage with "bracina" in the villa de Saulton was held by Willelmus dictus Wolf c. 1295 (Dryburgh, 253). Willelmus Lupus, a laic of St. Andrews, 1331 (RAA., I, p. 218). Throughout the middle ages the wolf was regarded with a sort of mysterious awe, from his association with the unseen world-perhaps in the first instance in consequence of his constant attendance on Woden. The semimythology of those times invested this cruel beast with many remarkable attributes, some of which are still remembered in our nursery literature. Hence many of the old pagan personal names, which descended to Christian times, allude to him; and his name is largely compounded with our local nomenclature, a source in later times of family names. Grimm has collected a large number of Old Germ, proper names compounded with wolf in his 'Deutsche Grammatik,' and it would be equally easy to do the same for the English, and other languages.
