Wolfswinkel Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The van Wolfswinkel surname has its origins in a small village in The Netherlands called Renswoude. The last has its origins in a farm within Renswoude called "Klein Wolfswinkel", which translates to: klein = 'small', wolf = 'wolf' and winkel = 'shop'. The middle part, van, means 'from' in Dutch and thus the surname means 'from Wolfswinkel'. The farm has had the name "Klein Wolfswinkel", as far is known, since 1321. The farm was sold to the Baron Taets van Amerongen. In 1920 the farm being of Saxon type was unfortunately lost by fire. The rebuild was so damaged by the second world war that it was again rebuilt in 1950.The original name is thus "van Wolfswinkel". Jan Arissen Swart is the man known to be the forefather of the van Wolfswinkel line. His second son was before the 18th of August 1711 (as it being the date of his lending contract of the farm) still known as Breunis Jansen Swart, but after known as Breunis Jansen (van) Wolfswinkel. All other surnames like; Wolfswinkel, Wolswinkel, Vanwolfswinkel and Wolleswinkel were originally van Wolfswinkel. All these names have taken a life on their own, through the carelessness of the name bearers as well as by various officials of the Burgelijke Stand. In short all called Wolswinkel are family through the forefather Jan Arissen Swart.
