This surname is derived from an occupation. (1) 'the wooder,' i.e. the woodman; (a) 'the wood-hewer,' i.e. a woodchopper. Both these names hare resolved themselves into Woodger and Woodyer; compare Sawyer for Sawer, or lawyer for lawer, or Pavier for paver. With the corrupted Woodger for Woodyer, compare Goodger for Goodier. As regards Woodhewer, that would naturally and inevitably become Woodyer.
