From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

(1) From the Old English personal name Wudernann (in 1070 Wudeman); (2) from the occupation, a woodcutter. An old surname in the parish of Strichen (Jervise, II, p. 137). William Wode was juror on an inquest made in St. Katherine's Chapel, Bave-ley, in 1280 (Bain, IV, 1762). Nicholas Wodman became burgess of Aberdeen in 1400, Thomas Wodeman attained the same distinction in 1486 (NSCM., I, p. I, 32), and is mentioned again in 1493 (CRA., p. 50). Andrew Wodman was a forestaller in Aberdeen in 1402 (CRA., p. 384), and John Wodman, prior of May in 1477 (Cawdor, p. 62), was in the same year postulate bishop of Ross (Dowden, p. 220). Thomas Wodman was servitor in Monletie in 1633 (SCM., III, p. 132). The surname is also common in Northumberland.
