Of local origin from some one of the several small places of the name. The Woodsides here noted probably derived their surname from Woodside in the parish of Beith, Ayrshire. James Wodsyid was a witness in Glasgow in 1550 (Protocols, I), James Wodsyd appears in Hunterstoun in 1583 (Hunter, p. 31), Jonet Woodsyd, daughter of John Woodsyd, was retoured heir in two tenements in the iurgh of Irvine in 1658 (Retours, Ayr, 503), and James Woodsyd was bailie there, 1667 (Irvine, II, p. 210). Woodsyde 1689.
