This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Wulfric' (v. Ulfric, Yonge), one of the many compounds of Ulf or Wolf; compare Orme and Worm, Ulph and Wolff (a). Adam Wulfric was admitted to the Roll of Guild Merchants of Shrewsbury in 1231. He is the ancestor of the Shropshire Wolryches (Shirley's Noble and Gentle Men, quoted by Lower). With regard to the forms Woollright and Wooldridge, compare the analogous Allwright and Aldridge from Aldrich.
