Mr. Harwood, in his notes to Erdeswick's Staffordshire, calls the Wolseleys "the most ancient amongst all the very ancient families in this county." Siward, mentioned as Lord of WIselei in an undated deed, stands at the head of the pedigree of "this venerable house, who are said to have been resident at Wolseley (co. Stafford) even before the Norman Conquest; and it has ever since remained their seat and residence." Shirley's Noble and Gentle Men.

They came to the United States and settled primarily in West Virginia, Kentucky but were noted throughout the Appalachian Mountain area. The fought in the Revolutionary and Civil wars, this being documented in historical records.
