(English) belonging to Wootton (common), the Anglo-Saxon Wudutún = the Farmstead by the Wood [Old English wudu, widu, a wood + tún, farm, etc.] In an 8th-cent. charter ('Cart. Sax. no. 157) Wootton-Wawen, Warw., is Wudu tun in a short superscription in A.-Saxon, Uuidutuun in the Latin body of the deed. Wootton, Berks, is referred to in a 9th-cent. Latin charter (‘C.S.’ no. 366) as Uudetun in one MS., Wudtun (with the Anglo-Saxon character for w) in another MS. A dative form is seen in a Survey of lands belonging to Winchester Cathedral (‘C.S.’ no. 1161), viz., 'To Wu- datuna' (prop. Wudatúne), prob. Wootton St. Lawrence, Hants.
Domesday forms are Otone (Beds), Odetone (Surrey), Wodetone (Wilts), etc.
