The early form is Ragg, clearly allied to Ragn, 'judgement' (Yonge), the chief element of such names as Ragner, Reginald, Raginbald, Raginmund (Raymond), and once a familiar nick, of Ragner, or Ragnar. For w, compare Wray and Ray. Wragg has almost ousted Ragg, but the reason is obvious. The name seems peculiar to Yorkshire.
