This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Ragg,' which see. The early form is Ragg, clearly allied to Ragn, 'judgement' (Yonge), the chief element of such names as Ragner, Reginald, Raginbald, Raginmund (Raymond), and once a familiar nick, of Ragner, or Ragnar. For w, compare Wray and Ray. Wragg has almost ousted Ragg, but the reason is obvious. The name seems peculiar to Yorkshire.
