Wyer Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

In More Irish Families (p. 239) Wyer was briefly mentioned as a Westmeath name, i.e. as a variant of Weir, which in that county is not an anglicized form of Mac an Mhaoir (as Wyer is) but a mistranslation of Ó Corra † or sometimes an English name. The form Wyer has long association with Co. Westmeath: Hugh Wyre of that county was one of the Irish Papists transplanted to Connacht under the Cromwellian regime in 1656, and Wyer is listed in the “census” of 1659-60 as a principal Irish name in the barony of Moycashel. That is the barony contiguous with Co. Offaly, where Wyer is a numerous name at the present day, as is also Weir. In those two counties Weir and Wyer have been often used synonymously: Weir indeed, is tending to supersede Wyer.
