Usually explained as "wild, untamed, violent," but more likely local from residence at a weald or open country. Bardsley says Wild "was a popular sobriquet in Yorkshire judging by the 1379 Poll Tax and the present county directory." Yorkshire is well known for its Wolds and the Weald of Sussex is also called the Wild. Philip Wilde, M.A., of the diocese of Brechin, was granted a canonry of Glasgow in 1342 (Pap. Pet., I, p. 3), and John Wild or Wyld was rector of Logy in 1372 (REB., I, 20; Jervise, Angus and Mearns, II, p. 230). Randulph Wyld was subdeacon of Brechin in 1372 (REB., I, 20), David Wilde held land in Dundee in 1442 (Charters and writs of Dundee, p. 21), Ingeram Wyld held a land in the Canongate of Edinburgh in 1493 (LSC., p. 236). Ellen Wild, relict of John Gardyner, 1509 (Rent. Dunk., p. 21). Joner Wyld appears in Wester Baldryk, 1573 (Pitfirrane, 202). James Wyld is recorded in Cleghorne in 1652 (Inquis., 3681), Thomas Wyld in Quhinkerstaine in 1655 (Lauder), and Christian Weild in Coldingham in 1762 (ibid.)
