From residence in a wynd or narrow street in a town. compare Vennal. In 1296 a pardon was granted for Geoffry del Wende of Dundee for causing the death of Ralph Chepman (Bain, II, 839). John Wynde, 'officium mari nostri' (i.e. mair of fee = chief executor of the sentences passed by the sheriff), had a charter of land of Petmukyston, Aberdeenshire, 1375 (RMS., I, 626). Christiane de Wyne was a tenant of the earl of Douglas in the barony of Kilbucho, 1376 (RHM., II, p. 16), and Robert Wynde in the parish of Fyvy was excommunicated in 1382 (REA., I, p. 165). The surname was common in Dysart in the sixteenth century (Dysart, passim).
