WYRFAUT: Roger Wyrfaut (Wyrfaudt, Wyrfaud, or Wyrfruch) appears in Fife before 1216 (RPSA., p. 279-285). Rogerus Wyrfauk had a half davoch from Hugh filius Waldef, 1242 (RAA I, p. 206). Another Roger Wyrfauch appears between 1255-71 (RPSA., p. 335). These individuals were probably offshoots from a Yorkshire family named Wirfauc or Wirefauc who were of considerable prominence there in the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. In English records the name also occurs as Wirefrauk, Wirefaud and Wyrfauk. The name may be Flemish. The final letter in the second element may be either a t or a c (these two letters being indistinguishable in the calligraphy of the period) or perhaps a d with a stroke like a t.
