'Gate (oryate), porta Joris': Promptorium Parvulorum Other forms of this surname are Yeatts, Yeates, and Yeats, which see. Evidently the two following names were closely related:

1606. Laurence Yate, of Nether Darwen: Wills at Chester.

Of local origin from one or more small places of the name meaning, "at the gate," from Old English geat, ME. yate. "A final s is not uncommon in surnames derived from topographical features, and may be either the plural formation or genitive case ending, but it is not possible to say which from inspection," or, again, it may be "a meaningless excrescence, the addition of a terminal sibilant being not uncommon with uncultured people" (Ewen, p. 251). Adam del Yate was juror on an inquisition held at Lochmaben in 1347 (Bain, III, 1499), John Yet held a land in Arbroath in 1425 (RAA., II, 93), Johannes ȝett, capellanus de Vasthall, died 1479 (REA., I, p. 218), William Yet appears as church elder for Fortrie in 1607 (Mair, p. 61), and Agnas Yatts is recorded in the parish of Falkirk in 1681 (Torphichen). An ancient family in Teviotdale were the Yetts of Yetton. John Yetts, wright in Edinburgh, 1722 (Guildry, p. 126). Yeatt 1688.
